
James Foulds
Vice Chair – University of Maryland Baltimore County
James Foulds is an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Systems at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). His research is dedicated to the critical area of socially conscious machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a focus on enhancing AI’s role in society by addressing fairness and privacy concerns. He also champions the practice of computational social science, often employing probabilistic models and Bayesian inference in his work.
Before joining UMBC, Dr. Foulds was a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, San Diego, as part of the Data Science Postdoctoral Fellowship program. This program was jointly sponsored by ITA, Calit2, the Qualcomm Institute, CSE, and ECE. Prior to that, he held a postdoctoral scholar position in Lise Getoor’s LINQS research group at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He earned his degree from Padhraic Smyth’s DataLab group at the University of California, Irvine.
